The West Side of Memorial Park Is Under Construction. Your Morning Loop Is Still Open.

The busiest construction site in Memorial Park right now is on the side closest to Tanglewood. Memorial Park Conservancy started work this spring on Memorial Groves, a 100-acre redesign along West Memorial Loop Drive with a target finish of late 2027. Even so, the Seymour Lieberman Trail is meant to stay open the whole time, and free parking on West Memorial Loop Drive is still available.

The Conservancy planned the work around an open loop. It has been moving the three-mile loop away from traffic one piece at a time for years, and the west side is the next piece. A neighbor who walks in from Woodway will find the usual route still works this November. What has changed is the hours, the parking rules and the dates.

A Trail Moved One Segment at a Time

This has happened before. In October 2022, a one-mile segment of the Seymour Lieberman Trail moved off Memorial Drive. The Conservancy's groundbreaking announcement describes that stretch as "an exciting run through the trees and over ravines." That reroute was one of several projects in the park's Ten-Year Plan. The others are the Clay Family Eastern Glades (July 2020), the Sports Complex (October 2020), the Kinder Land Bridge and Cyvia & Melvyn Wolff Prairie (February 2023), and the Running Complex (November 2023).

Memorial Groves does the same thing for the west side. About 0.7 mile of the trail, or 3,600 feet, will move farther from West Memorial Loop Drive. The space it leaves behind gets new trees, a shadier route and grassy gathering areas beside the path. The Conservancy's April 17 construction notice is clear on access:

"The Seymour Lieberman Trail will remain open at all times during construction. Once improvements are complete, the loop will continue to offer an approximately three-mile route, providing an uninterrupted option for walkers and runners."

The finished loop keeps its three-mile length, with its west side set farther back from West Memorial Loop Drive.

What the Construction Actually Closes

The closures are narrower than the project's size suggests. Here is what the Conservancy lists:

  • Closed until 2027: the western portion of the Outer Loop Trail, according to the Conservancy's trail status page.
  • Partly off-limits along the Seymour Lieberman Trail: some benches and some existing fitness stations. New, larger fitness areas are part of the project.
  • Mostly unaffected: water fountains stay usable, and if one has to go offline, the Conservancy says it will keep the downtime as short as possible.
  • Unchanged: free parking along West Memorial Loop Drive.

The April notice describes the plan for construction, not the condition of a given bench on a given morning. Posted signs on site are the best guide to day-to-day changes. The Conservancy's June update shows the work so far has included more than trail building. Contractors treated invasive grasses across 10 acres of prairie along the future Memorial Groves site.

One closure in early November has nothing to do with Memorial Groves. The GHORBA Race Speed Series closes parts of the Bayou Wilds trails from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 7, per the Conservancy's status page. Mountain bikers who ride Bayou Wilds on Saturday mornings will want to plan around it.

Parking Has Its Own Clock

The free spaces closest to Tanglewood are still there, and they come with fewer rules than the paid lots across the park. The Conservancy's parking page splits the options this way:

Option Cost Hours or rules
On-street along Memorial Loop Drive, including West Memorial Loop Drive Free Still open during Memorial Groves construction
Picnic Loop Free Lot closes 9 p.m., reopens 4:30 a.m.
Cullen Running Trails Center, Sports Complex, Tennis Center, Fitness Center, Golf Course, Clay Family Eastern Glades, Kinder Land Bridge/Melvyn Wolff Prairie $2 per three-hour block Meters run 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For anyone who runs before sunrise, the gate times matter. The Running Complex and Picnic Loop lots open at 4:30 a.m., and if you're still inside after the 9 p.m. close, the automatic gates let you drive out for free.

The Arboretum Shifts to Its Winter Schedule

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center sits on the same west side, and its main entrance is on Tanglewood's own boulevard at 4501 Woodway Dr. A second entrance is at 120 W Loop N Fwy, and both have parking. The Arboretum's visitor information doesn't mention any access limits tied to the Memorial Groves work.

The change comes with the calendar. Starting November 1, the grounds and trails move to the Arboretum's winter schedule of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, down from 7:30 p.m. from March through October. The Nature Center building keeps its 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours. That means about 90 fewer minutes of daylight access each evening, right when after-work walks get squeezed by earlier sunsets.

Other dates on the Arboretum's 2026 closure list:

  • November 26: closed for Thanksgiving
  • December 24: closes at noon
  • December 25: closed

Parking is $6.50 per vehicle and free on Thursdays. A regular weekday visitor who switches to Thursdays skips the fee each week.

November and December, Date by Date

This fall's events tell the same story. While the west side is under construction, the park's big public gatherings are being held on the east side at Clay Family Eastern Glades, and the Arboretum covers the west side.

  1. November 6, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Sip & Stroll at the Arboretum. A guided twilight hike with two glasses of wine or Saint Arnold beer and happy-hour snacks. The evening ends with the first look at the menu for Tapas on the Trails 2027, the Arboretum's Valentine's Day event. Ages 21 and up; $40 for members, $45 for nonmembers. Details here.
  2. November 7, 6 a.m.–1 p.m. GHORBA race closures in Bayou Wilds, as noted above.
  3. November 14. Star Parties with the Houston Astronomical Society at Clay Family Eastern Glades, free. Event listing.
  4. December 4, 5–9 p.m. Neighborhood Nights presented by H-E-B: Holiday Edition at Clay Family Eastern Glades, 6502 Memorial Dr. Holiday activities, local food trucks, and an outdoor screening of Frozen starting at 6 p.m. Free; RSVPs are encouraged but not required. RSVP and details. The listing's summary shows an earlier end time than the main description, so check the page before you go.
  5. December 4 through early January 2027. Deck the Park lights. The Neighborhood Nights event switches them on, and they stay lit for the public into the new year.
  6. December 5. Homemade Holidays at the Arboretum, with workshop sessions from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Event page.

What the West Side Becomes

When the fencing comes down, the side of the park nearest Tanglewood will have the kind of features the east side gained earlier in the decade. Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects designed Memorial Groves. A new visitor center by Moody Nolan, designed with NBW, will mark the main entrance. The Camp Logan Playground will have play features modeled on World War I objects such as soldiers' helmets and army crates. The plan also adds parking, restrooms and educational spaces.

The theme goes back to the park's start. Memorial Park was established in 1924 and named to honor the 70,000 soldiers who trained at Camp Logan, a U.S. Army camp during World War I. Memorial Groves is designed to recognize everyone who supported the war effort there. The finished Seymour Lieberman Trail improvements are set to open together with Memorial Groves, and the Conservancy's project page, updated this fall, still lists late 2027.

Until then, the loop is open, the free curbside parking on West Memorial Loop Drive is still there, and the Arboretum's Woodway gate opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. through February.

Projects like Memorial Groves affect how buyers see the streets around Memorial Park long before they open, and discreet advice on that timing is part of how Albert Cantu represents Tanglewood clients. If you're weighing a move on Tanglewood's side of the park, schedule a private consultation.
