Helix Park Has Its Fall Calendar Ready Before Its Kitchens

Helix Park has more than 18 acres of public green space on a 37-acre campus off Old Spanish Trail. The Texas Medical Center keeps the park and lawn open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., though hours may change from month to month. This October the park's events calendar has something nearly every week, and several dates are open to the public. The restaurant side is further behind. Of the four restaurants TMC named at Helix Park, Potbelly is the only one confirmed open. Ojo de Agua, RAKKAN Ramen and la Madeleine are all still listed as "Coming Soon."

For anyone living a few minutes away in Braeswood Place, Southgate or Holly Hall, that gap decides how to use the park this month. Plan the visit around an event. Food on site isn't guaranteed.

What's There on an Ordinary Day

Helix Park's site describes six programmed parks and a 1,000-seat amphitheater. TMC opened the TMC3 Collaborative Building and the Helix Park green space in October 2023. At the time, TMC described the design as a series of linked parks in a double-helix layout. The landscape architecture is by Mikyoung Kim Design. Two gardens stand out for a walk. The Helix CD Garden has linear water features, bridges and shade. The Helix AB Garden has a water feature and an active-play zone.

The park's posted guidelines are more specific than most people expect:

  • Park chairs and tables, blankets on the lawn, and the gardens and fountains are all open to visitors. Stepping into the plantings or picking from them is not allowed.
  • Dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after. They must stay off lawns, flowerbeds and watering areas, except in the designated fenced off-leash zones.
  • Bicycles must be walked on campus and locked at designated racks. The visitor page lists 14 bike-rack stations along with bike paths and lanes, so check the current riding rule before you pedal in.

The guidelines welcome both Houston residents and visitors, so the lawn isn't reserved for badge holders.

October, Date by Date

These are the public listings for the rest of the month:

Date Event Time Where
Sat, Oct 10 Baylor College of Medicine Community 5K and Well-Being Fair 9 a.m. start Helix Park
Wed, Oct 14 The Midweek Make: "Gesture with Ink and Wash," all ages 5:30–7 p.m. Helix Park
Oct 16–22 Adirondack Chair Art Contest finalists on display All week TMC3 first-floor lobby
Fri, Oct 23 Fall Fair with chair awards and The Addams Family 5:30–8:30 p.m. Amphitheater and lawn
Sat, Oct 24 Houston Heart Walk 7:30–11 a.m. Helix Park
Tue, Oct 27 Halloween Bingo 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Helix Hall
Thu, Oct 29 Beacon CoLab Tea Talks 12:30–1:15 p.m. Helix Park

The times sort into three groups. Both weekend events are morning events. The 5K starts at 9 a.m., and the Heart Walk ends at 11 a.m. Bingo and Tea Talks fall in the middle of the workday, which suits people already on campus. That leaves two weekday evenings, Oct 14 and Oct 23, as the easiest dates for a neighbor coming over after work.

The Fall Fair is the busiest night. Carnival games and crafts hosted by local community partners start at 5:30 p.m., along with voting for the Adirondack Chair Art Contest. The awards ceremony is in the amphitheater at 6:30 p.m., and The Addams Family starts at 7. Registration runs through Eventbrite from the event page. The three finalists are:

  1. Ashna Karpe, "America in the Making"
  2. Gabriel Peña, "The American Tapestry"
  3. Debbie Guelzow, "Made of Many"

The chairs will be in the TMC3 lobby for the week before the fair, so you can see all three before voting on the 23rd.

The morning of Oct 10 is a little busier than the Helix Park calendar shows. Hermann Park's October calendar lists a free community Zumba session and a free guided Sound Bath at the Tsuru Family Terrace that same Saturday.

Where the Food Hours and the Event Hours Line Up

Potbelly opened at 7255 Helix Park Ave. on June 3, 2025. Its current location page lists hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Older listings give longer hours. Helix Park's own dining page shows 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and TMC's 2025 opening announcement said 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Potbelly's live page is the one to check on the day.

Compared with the October calendar, those posted hours only partly line up. The 5K on Oct 10 starts at 9 a.m., two hours before Potbelly's 11 a.m. weekend opening, and the Heart Walk on Oct 24 ends right at 11 a.m. On a Friday, the Fall Fair's opening hour falls inside Potbelly's weekday hours, but the movie runs until 8:30 p.m., after the 8 p.m. closing on the live page. The popcorn at the screening is part of the event program.

The restaurants still to come would fill the evening gap. TMC's Sept. 9, 2026 announcement named two concepts for the TMC3 Collaborative Building. la Madeleine Bakery & Café will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. RAKKAN Ramen will add a sushi bar and izakaya-style selections to its ramen menu. The same release said about 90% of the retail, restaurant and ground-floor space across TMC Commons and TMC3 is now leased. Neither restaurant's listing gives an opening date.

Ojo de Agua is a useful guide to how long these timelines can run. In June 2025, Community Impact reported that its Helix Park opening had moved to early 2026. As of October 2026, Helix Park's listing for the restaurant still says "Coming Soon" and gives no hours. TMC's September release describes the new restaurants as joining Ojo de Agua and Potbelly at Helix Park. Until the restaurant posts hours, treat it as not yet open.

The Commons on Bertner Runs on a Separate Schedule

Across the main campus, TMC Commons at 6550 Bertner Ave. is getting its own set of restaurants as part of a 30,000-square-foot food hall renovation led by Elkus Manfredi Architects. The announced lineup is Chick-fil-A, Jimmy John's, Starbucks, and Leaf & Grain. Leaf & Grain is Houston-owned, and this will be its seventh Houston-area location.

Part of that lineup is already serving. TMC's campus update says the Commons is open during construction, with Chick-fil-A, Starbucks and rotating Fooda lunch vendors. TMC's schedule runs Phase I from January to November 2026. Phase II is November 2026, when the west side reopens with limited food service and work moves to the east side. Exterior work and landscaping, including a new outdoor green space, are expected to finish in 2027. Community Impact described the restaurant openings at both buildings as phased, starting in fall 2026 and continuing into early 2027.

Getting There This Month

Helix Park is on the METRORail Red Line, and a free shuttle runs within the campus. If you drive, event pages send visitors to the surface lot or the TMC3 garage at 1885 Old Spanish Trail. Some events give the code "TMC3" to validate two hours of parking. That validation is set event by event, so check the event page before you go.

Two current road changes affect the usual routes:

  • South Braeswood Boulevard: several southbound lane closures between Cambridge and Moursund for sewer work through Nov. 2. Sidewalks, driveways and bus stops stay accessible.
  • METRO Routes 11 Almeda/Lyons and 28 OST–Wayside: both detour around construction near Almeda and Lee through Oct. 10, the same Saturday as the 5K.

Helix Park's calendar still shows October when you ask for November or December, so nothing beyond this month has been posted yet.

Albert Cantu follows openings like RAKKAN Ramen, la Madeleine and the Commons renovation because they change how the blocks around the Texas Medical Center are used day to day. If you live near Helix Park and want to talk through what these changes mean for your own plans, schedule a private consultation.
